His rescue team had remained on the beach in protected positions. Cooper, after recovering from her unceremonious throw to the sand, had not been able to give her team permission to engage without a directive. They had made the trip out to the sub in silence, one fallen Ranger in the bottom of the submersible.

The team and Ari spent three days in the sub before they docked and disembarked to go their separate ways. Despite the weight of the situation, Ari and Jasmine had spent most of that time together talking, playing chess, and simply sitting in each other’s company. A connection was made between them that neither could have explained.

“She wormed her way into my soul,” Ari said with a sigh.

She was still there, but he had left that dock knowing it would never work. On the day they met, she had nearly been killed for him and seeing her in harm’s way had maddened him. He could never see her in danger again – even if she was a formidable agent in her own right.

Ari came from a nation where women were conscripted into military service, but it was not a part of his personal heritage or background. His own mother had been an English educator living in Israel when she met his Israeli father. He and his siblings had been raised with more Western ideals of chivalry, and his sisters had been sent away to boarding school and college before they were of age to be asked to serve. While he had worked many missions with female operatives over the years and had served with women in the Israeli military, he retained an ingrained need to protect the women in his own life.

As Ari sat in his armchair, a tear of remorse escaped his eye and he caught himself wondering what Jasmine was doing at that moment. He stood suddenly, angry at himself, but somehow renewed. He reached over to a cheap violin he had bought as his only touch of individuality in his American apartment.

As he pulled his bow back to play Jasmine’s tune, he thought to himself, One more indulgence before this world of darkness draws me back in...
